Preview: watch the first two minutes of JJ Abrams & Alfonso Cuaron’s Believe.

Believe premieres Monday, March 10 after The Voice.

(That’s a pretty excellent two minutes. Classic Cuaron with the long shot - even though I’m pretty sure it actually cuts a few times. It still looks great.)

JJ Abrams has told how a fan who found his wallet held him to ransom until he revealed what happened at the end of TV show LOST.
JJ explained: “It was a really funny, crazy story where this one policewoman, rather diminutive, found my wallet and held it ransom until I would tell her what the end of LOST was. But despite that she was incredibly sweet and the woman who found it didn’t have to turn it in, but she did.” [x]

"I definitely feel that the work that Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse did on LOST, how do you do more cinematic work than that?”

He also said that he hopes to be able to attend the LOST 10th anniversary Paleyfest panel in March, but he isn’t sure he’ll be able to make it. (via EOnline)

Wired: Reading J.J. Abrams’ Novel S. is Like Downloading LOST to Your Brain

If you were a fan of LOST— and especially the speculation and theorizing that surrounded the show itself — then S., the novel/meta-narrative by J.J. Abrams and Doug Dorst, is pretty much written for you. At times, it feels as if reading the book is like having the entirety of LOST (the television series and the fandom alike) downloaded into your head simultaneously.

S. is available on Amazon for $23.Update: Amazon lowered the price to $21 today.

J.J. Abrams talks with the New York Times about his upcoming book S. which comes out next week. You can pre-order it now.

Working on this project was different from anything I’ve ever been involved in. The multilayered conceit of the thing almost makes it a play interacting with a book. That is, there is the novel itself (“Ship of Theseus”), which stands alone as its own story, and then there are the notes in the margins: a conversation and investigation and mystery and love story between two people, which is both connected to and separate from the central text. Then, there is the editor of the book, who appears in an introduction and in footnotes. So there were many characters and points of view to balance. It felt less like film or TV, and more like concocting something insane and very special. Doug truly outdid himself. As did the publishers. You’ll know what I mean when you see it.

J.J. Abrams releases part 2 of that mysterious trailer

This time, he’s being way more forthcoming, and the project is … a truly unique, fascinating book called S. conceived by Abrams and written by Doug Dorst, to be published by Little, Brown on Oct. 29.

S.is basically about the relationship between a grad student named Eric and a college senior named Jennifer. They trade notes in the margins of a (fictional) 1949 novel by a mysterious author named V.M. Straka. S.contains the novel within the novel; copious handwritten notes between Jennifer and Eric (“a conversation that plunges them into the unknown,” according to the book jacket); and dozens of pieces of ephemera between the pages like newspaper clippings and a napkin with a map drawn on it. (S. will come shrink-wrapped so none of this extra material falls out.) It looks like a dense but often funny mystery — and exactly the kind of novel you’d hope for from Abrams.

“I could not be more excited for people to get their hands on this book,” Abrams tells EW. “It is difficult to describe because while it is a compelling mystery and love story, it is also much more than that. The work that everyone has done on S. is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. Frankly, I’m amazed it was even possible to do this project at all.”
