Fuckyeahlost.com interviews Tracie from Jezebel.com!

I recently came across Tracie’s LOST recaps on Jezebel.com and enjoyed her insight immensely. I sent her an email about doing an interview, and now here it is. Check out what she had to say below!

First of all, introduce yourself! Who are you, what do you do, and where can we find you on the interweb?
I’m Tracie Egan Morrissey, and I’m a blogger who works for Jezebel.com, a women’s interest site that’s part of Gawker Media. I mostly cover television, feminism, and marijuana. I also do a bi-weekly vlog with Rich Juzwiak (http://fourfour.typepad.com) called Pot Psychology (http://jezebel.com/tag/pot-psychology/), in which we dispense advice using an “herbal remedy.” You can follow me on Twitter. Now, let’s talk about LOST! How did you get into the show? Did it click right away, and if not what was it that made that click happen?
I began watching Lost after the first two seasons came out on DVD. I ripped through them in a marathon, and was hooked ever since.

What do you think was the most shocking moment?
The most shocking moment had to be during the finale of season three (“Through the Looking Glass”), when we learned that the show had switched from flashbacks to flashforwards. That shit blew my mind.

Where do you stand on Team Jack/Team Locke; Ben/Widmore; Jacob/MIB?
I am so sick of Jack and his bag of bullshit. Have you noticed that he’s been using British inflections in his dialogue in the past two seasons? WTF is up with that? He even makes addiction look boring. Locke rules. First of all, he travels with hundreds of knives. Secondly, knows how to make hallucinogens out of organic ingredients. Despite the fact that he is sometimes portrayed as pathetic and sad, he’s someone to root for. I like that he’s always searching for answers and meaning, as that is the entire viewing experience of this show.

I don’t know where I stand on the Ben/Widmore thing. Ben is a great character. He might be one of the most comical villains in serialized television. But ultimately, he always lies and can’t be trusted. I don’t necessarily know if that makes him worse than anyone else, but I really hope that they explore Widmore’s history a little more. He’s so mysterious. Like, who is Penny’s mother? And why does he live in an apartment if he’s so incredibly wealthy?

Ultimately, I think it’s important to note that both Ben and Locke were born prematurely (Locke, after his mother was hit by a car, and Ben, during his parents’ hiking trip). I think that might provide some clues as to their “leadership” roles on the Island. Perhaps they came into them before they were ready. Also, I think that the Old Testament story of Jacob and Esau (in which Jacob, the younger brother, essentially steals Esau’s birthright) is applicable to all three of these power struggles, with the part of Jacob being played out by Locke, Ben, and Jacob, respectively, and Esau being played out by Jack, Widmore, and MIB.

I’m beginning to think that Jacob (the one from the Island, not the bible) might turn out to be somewhat of a dick. But I don’t think that the dynamics of the relationships of any of these guys can be broken down to “black and white.” In fact, it would probably be more accurately described as “gray area.” Maybe these guys are supposed to be working together, and creating a balance, instead of trying to fly solo. Isn’t that the whole point of “live together, die alone”?

Have you ever had a theory that seemed crazy at the time but turned out to be true?
Yes! Time travel! Initially Lindelof and Cuse said that the show wasn’t about time travel, and then they took it there. So now I’m convinced that this final season is about purgatory and reincarnation, even though the producers had initially shot that theory down as well.

Favorite character and why? Least favorite character and why?
My fave is Desmond. He’s just the best. I like him drunk, I like him sober, I like him in the present, and I like him jumping around in time. He’s like my green eggs and ham.  I also like that he has his priorities in check and realizes that he has a good thing (his family: Penny and his son) going for him. While the other Losties are so up their own butts with “fixing” shit, he’d rather spend his time on what’s already working. Like I said before about the importance of balance, Desmond seems to get it. I also really like Sayid, as I think he has the best instincts and intuition. But his beautiful fingernails gross me out and his back story doesn’t get to me like Desmond’s does.

My least favorite character is Rose. I know we’re supposed to think that she’s wise, but I think she’s rude, not funny, and willfully ignorant. When Sawyer, Kate, and Juliet got off the sub at the end of season five and happened upon Rose and Bernard living in the jungle, the first thing she said—after not having seen them in three years—was, “Oh, hell no!” What a bitch! She and Bernard then said that they were happy living by the beach, and that they didn’t care if they died. The feeling is mutual for me on that last part.

Favorite season and/or episode and why? Least favorite season and/or episode and why?
My least favorite season is three, but weirdly, it has some of my favorite episodes in it, like “Greatest Hits” (the one in which Charlie lists the best moments in his life) and “Through the Looking Glass.”

If you had to have one character who is still alive die, who would it be and why?
Please kill Rose. NOW!

What moment made you the happiest?
Hmm…that’s a toss up. I was really happy when Michael sailed away, meaning we wouldn’t have to hear him incessantly go on and on about “my boy!” but I was also really happy when Penny and Desmond were reunited. Usually, I’m into the geek stuff (the mysticism, symbolism, meaning, logistics, time travel, etc.) of the show, but Pen and Des convinced me to care about them.

Which characters death hit you the hardest?
Charlie. Totally. As much as I’m glad to never hear Claire say, “Chah-lee” again, it was pretty sad when he we was floating and did that sign of the cross.

What has been your favorite part of the entire experience of the show?
The best part of the show is finding Easter eggs within the episodes, trying to figure out their big meaning, reading the texts that are referenced in the show, and talking with other geeks about our theories.

What would be the perfect way for the show to end in your opinion?
I’d like it if Vincent would meet a really nice bitch and have some puppies. (Does the fertility issue on the Island apply to dogs? And if so, what does it mean!!!???)
