As a new feature here on FYL, we’re going to be interviewing some interesting people about LOST! First up is Jacob from lostblog.com. Click ‘read more’ to read the rest of the interview, and then go check out Jacob’s great site!
First of all, let’s hear all about you and all about your site and give us all the relevant links that we should know!
My name is Alexander Ripps (aka Jacob) and I am the proud owner of LOSTblog.com. (Twitter.com/TheLostBlog)
How did you get into the show? Did it click right away, and if not what was it that made that click happen?
I did not watch the show until the summer of 2006. I was aware of the show; I knew it had something to do with a plane crash. I was working at an internet development firm for the Summer before leaving for law school in the Fall. A girl I worked with had the season 1 dvd with her one day. We talked briefly about the show, specifically that I had never seen it. She insisted I take the dvds home with me for the weekend….and the world was never the same! I was immediately hooked by the fantastic production, great writing, acting, music and story. I know quality when I see it, and this show just had everything. It was hard to believe it actually came from a broadcast network.
What do you think was the most shocking moment?
It has to be the flash forward in the season 3 finale. That was such a defining point of the show. It took everything we had learned for 3 seasons and suddenly changed the game.
Where do you stand on Team Jack/Team Locke; Ben/Widmore; Jacob/MIB?
Locke. Ben. Jacob.
Have you ever had a theory that seemed crazy at the time but turned out to be true?
No. If it came true it was not crazy. If it was crazy, it never came true.
Favorite character and why? Least favorite character and why?
My favorite character is probably Ben. For someone who was not even an original character, I believe his character is the most interesting from a psychological analysis point of view. Books could be written about Ben. Not to mention the tremendous acting of Michael Emerson. Least favorite character is probably Ana Lucia. I just didn’t find anything endearing about her.
Favorite season or episode and why? Least favorite season or episode and why?
Tough one. I think it’s hard to beat the first season. It was just so original and really set the standard for the show. At it’s best, Lost is a character-driven show and the first season was the most character-driven. Least favorite would probably be season 3 for no other reason than that there were some long stretches without some major characters. I know season 3 is generally considered the weakest; but if you watch it on dvd, like I did, I think it flows together as well as any of the other seasons.
If you had to have one character who is still alive die, who would it be and why?
Can we blow up Doc Arzt again?
What moment made you the happiest?
Not to be a sap, but if you didn’t have the good vibes flowing during Desmond and Penny’s phone call at the end of The Constant, then you must be the smoke monster.
Which characters death hit you the hardest?
Juliet. She was just super hot. I’ll really miss her smokin muffins.
What would be the perfect way for the show to end in your opinion?
I’ve thought for a long time that the end of the show would simply be the pilot episode all over again. I think it would be really ballsy if for the last episode, they just re-aired the pilot. Obviously everything in season 6 would have to lead up to the pilot being a logical ending to the viewers. I always that would be really cool though. Starting and ending a show with the same episode.
